I joined Bellway Homes 8 years ago as an Assistant Accountant and was promoted to my current role in 2019. As the company puts great emphasis on recruiting from within, whenever possible, I found myself given that opportunity and through hard work and great Senior Management support, I have been able to develop and grow in the role.

A typical day in my position may vary, but my main responsibilities are managing the Finance Team, producing the monthly Management Accounts and ensuring a strong Control Environment is adhered to.

One of the main benefits of my role, and especially working in the house build sector, is that it has allowed me to interact with people who have specialist skills, and provides a great opportunity to learn something new each day, because of this, one of the most appealing aspects is that it brings elements of other departments work together to produce a tangible end result. Furthermore, a great sense of pride in my position is seeing someone join the team and then flourish in their own career and grow within the business.

Matt Scullion

I have worked with Bellway since 2019 In the Scotland West finance team. I studied Accounting and Finance in university, and I am currently working towards my C.I.M.A chartered exams to become a fully qualified accountant. My role within the finance department primarily consists of the processing of invoices, and preparation of supplier and subcontractor payments. While working with Bellway, I also assisted with the Customer First launch as one of the divisional champions, and I am part of the Mental Health First Aid team for our division. Our department deals with several thousand invoices each month which can be a challenge to manage, but it’s always a relief when the month end payment batches are approved! I don’t have prior experience in the construction industry before joining Bellway, so the Scotland West team has been great for answering any questions I have and pointing me in the right direction.

Naomi Henson

I have been with Bellway for over 10 years, having joined the company as a Purchase Ledger Clerk and progressed to Divisional Accountant.

Prior to joining Bellway, I worked in Finance at various manufacturing companies, however the Construction Industry is where I have felt most at home.

Bellway has always encouraged my development and has supported me whilst I study towards my CIMA qualification.

My role has enabled me to support all departments within East Midlands division. I also engage regularly with colleagues at other Divisions as well as those at Head Office, which ensures no two days are the same.

Julie Rafferty

It is a pleasure to be back working in housebuilding and working with Bellway and the North West team. Accounting in housebuilding is always challenging but it is all about the people around you that make the working day enjoyable. 

I have both an experienced management team and a finance team who I thank for all the support and assistance they have given me in my first year. That sentiment also goes out to the Head office teams who have guided and helped in learning new processes and systems. I hope that my 23 years of experience in this industry will bring a new ideas and a different perspective, whilst giving confidence that they are in safe hands. 

Housebuilding is a great industry to work in and working in finance allows me to interact at all levels and across all departments. It is unique in that as a PLC you have great training, clear processes, and the right tools to do your job, whilst retaining that family culture with care and support that come from working in a divisional office. I am very fortunate to have an MD who has that great balance of getting the job done but balanced with a lot of fun and humour, and that sentiment filters down to every person in the business. Joining Bellway was indeed the best decision I have made in my career, and I look forward to the years ahead.

I've been an FD at Bellway for 18 months and when I started, I was completely new to the housebuilding sector. I have always worked in industry and completed my CIMA qualifications as a graduate at Sky before also working in telecommunications and manufacturing.

At Bellway there is a perfect blend between the autonomy I need to run my division and having a support network to confer and collaborate with. Working in finance I’m used to fielding interesting, obscure (and sometimes odd) questions and thankfully Bellway is no different. It’s this and the ability to make a difference across the business that makes Bellway such a great place to work.

Since working at Bellway, the business has supported me in a number of ways to excel in my career. They have supported me through an apprenticeship to complete my accountancy qualification (ACCA), by not only giving me time during the working week to study but funding the course and exams as well. 

I had my first child whilst completing the apprenticeship and the business encouraged me to keep going with it upon my return to work from maternity leave. This wouldn’t have been possible without the great support I received from my line manager and other senior personnel within the wider finance team. 

I have also had the opportunity to rise through the ranks gaining experience in a number of roles and progressed in my career. It’s refreshing to work for a business where regardless of the stage you are at in life, will offer opportunities to progress in your career.
