Meet Matt, Assistant Site Manager

Employee Stories

Bellway has been an incredibly supportive employer and has enabled me to work my way up from labourer to the position of assistant manager in just six years.

I first got into the construction industry working for my father in the family business as a labourer. But I changed career direction totally and worked for two years as a prison officer.

I wanted to get back into construction and applied to Bellway, who gave me a chance to pursue a career in the industry of my choice.

In my role now as an assistant site manager, there are a lot of bases to cover and it involves a great deal more than just building houses. The job calls on me to manage fellow employees and to deal with customers, building relationships with them and managing their expectations.

My working remit also sees me responsible for a number of other issues, such as health and safety on site. The wide range of my responsibilities has enabled me to complete my mental health first aid training, which something I’ve always wanted to do.

I would have to say that my proudest working moment yet came in helping the site manager at the City Fields development in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, win a Pride in the Job Quality Award from the National House Building Council (NHBC) in recognition of his excellent work there.

What I love most about the job is developing working relationships with my colleagues and being an integral part of a mutually supportive team, where everyone knows the role they have to play in completing the job successfully and to the highest standard.
