We have developed our own Site Managers Development Programme to help talented individuals advance and grow their career in Site Management.

The Construction Management apprenticeships we offer are specific to Bellway and are delivered by a nationally recognised construction provider, Sheffield College.  The learning is delivered both on site and via block weeks of formal learning (these may be residential dependant on your location).

The block weeks include a structured management development programme of learning and practical workshops.

When you are not at college you will be on site with your experienced Site Manager doing the job and learning at the same time. You will also be supported by your College Assessor to build a portfolio of evidence and demonstrate competence for your NVQ qualification.

The apprenticeships will teach you about topics such as:

  • Construction Technology
  • Science & Materials
  • Construction Practice & Management
  • Legal & Statutory Responsibilities in Construction
  • Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification)
  • Site Supervision & Operations
  • Surveying, Measuring & Setting Out

Other work based qualifications to complete include:

  • Site Supervision
  • Health and Safety
  • First Aid
  • Customer Care

Upon completion of the Construction Management apprenticeship you will be a qualified and experienced Assistant Site Manager

Your training does not stop here, because as well as gaining further experience there are plenty of exciting opportunities for career progression. Bellway will continue to support your development, for example you will undertake further industry related courses and e-learning modules.

Your next step could be to study for a fully funded Higher or Advanced Construction Management apprenticeship with additional management development to support your career within the company.

This is why we believe there is no better Site Manager development programme than with Bellway Homes.

About you and your career history at Bellway/in Construction?

I started out as a bricklayer from school, I progressed through the ranks and I have been site managing now for around 16 years. I achieved my CIOB certificate and diploma at night school standing me in good stead for a career in site management.

I joined Bellway Yorkshire in June 2017 and have just begun my 3rd year.

Initially helping with year-end plots and covering various sites, I began my first full site for Bellway in September 2016 at Frobisher Court Finningley. This was a 45 unit site including a barn conversion.

The site ran and sold superbly and saw me achieve the overall LABC National Site Manager of the Year award in London after winning the regional final earlier in the year.

This is without exception the highest point of my career and being able to enjoy it in London with my Wife and directors was very special! And the memory will stay with me for a very long time.

Featuring in the Bellway Brief made me proud to be part of this company and bringing the award home for Yorkshire made all the hard work worthwhile.

I am now on my next site at Imperial Gardens Howden (300 units over 2 phases) and up to now the site is progressing nicely.

Three words to describe the culture at Bellway?

What is the most interesting thing about working for Bellway, and about the work you do?

The most interesting thing for me would be the programming of works. I like to review them regularly and make changes to try and find the best system of works to produce the best finish possible in readiness for CML and completion. More recently the changes made have been minimal as I feel I have now mastered the most time and quality efficient process of works to produce a home to the high standards expected by Bellway.

What are three benefits you’ve discovered about working here that you weren’t aware of when you started?

  • Opportunities for further education; for example SMSTS training, funded NVQ’S etc.
  • Career progression.
  • Robust pension scheme.

What advice would you give a job seeker who’s thinking about applying for a role with us?

If a job seeker is looking to apply for the role that I do, I would suggest that they work to build up their confidence level to interact with the general public. Managing different stakeholders effectively from subcontractors to customers is a key part of the role.

If you were a Bellway house type what would you be and why?

The “Watchmaker”. I have chosen this one as it is large (which is similar to my personality) and the role of a watch maker is to pay attention to detail which is similar to my job role on site.
